On R U OK? Day, we wanted to show up in a way that felt genuine. Not loud. Not overproduced. Just human. So across Plume Café locations, we shared a simple gesture: a house-made cookie with every purchase.

Over the course of the day, we gave away more than 1,000 cookies—and while that number still surprises us, what stayed with us most were the moments around them.
Some people enjoyed theirs quietly with a coffee.
Some smiled and said thank you, then paused a little longer than usual.
Some took the cookie straight to someone else, “This one’s for you.”
And that was the point.

Because cafés are special like that.
Especially the environments we’re part of: universities, hospitals, campuses full of people carrying a lot. These spaces are busy, emotional, demanding and deeply human. And in the middle of all of it, there’s often a cup of coffee and a quiet table where conversations happen.
Sometimes they’re light.
Sometimes they’re hard.
Sometimes they’re the ones that really matter.
We don’t take that role lightly.
R U OK? Day reminded us that being a café isn’t just about what’s on the menu. It’s about how you show up. About creating spaces where people feel comfortable enough to pause, connect and be seen.
And while that day gave us a reason to be extra intentional, we believe those moments matter every day of the year.
If a cookie helped someone feel thought of.
If it made a conversation easier to start.
If it reminded someone they weren’t alone even briefly then it did exactly what it was meant to do.
Sometimes the smallest things carry the most meaning.
